CompTIA — Vendor Overview
About CompTIA
CompTIA (Computing Technology Industry Association) is a U.S.-based, vendor-neutral professional certification body founded in 1982 as the Association of Better Computer Dealers (ABCD). CompTIA rebranded to its current name in 1990 to reflect a broader mission: establishing global, vendor-neutral standards for IT knowledge and skills.
CompTIA is best known for introducing the A+ certification in 1993, which was revolutionary for being the first truly vendor-neutral IT certification. Today, CompTIA issues certifications across 120+ countries, with over 2.2 million people having earned CompTIA credentials since inception.
Mission: Unlocking the potential of every student, career changer, and professional seeking to begin or advance in a technology career.
Headquarters: Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
Certification Philosophy: All CompTIA certifications are vendor-neutral, hardware-agnostic, and designed for IT professionals at all career levels — from entry-level (Tech+, A+) through infrastructure specialists (Network+, Server+, Cloud+, Linux+) to advanced cybersecurity practitioners (CySA+, PenTest+, SecurityX). This is distinctly different from vendor-specific certifications (like Cisco, AWS, or Microsoft) because CompTIA certs test foundational knowledge applicable across multiple vendors and platforms.
CompTIA certifications are globally recognized, DoD 8140 compliant, and widely used in federal contracting, government IT roles, and enterprise IT departments as baseline credentials for hiring and promotion.

Continuing Education (CE) & Renewal Policy
3-Year Renewal Cycle
All CompTIA certifications must be renewed or recertified every three years from the date earned or last renewed. Failure to renew by the expiration date results in certification expiration.
Affected Certifications: A+, Tech+, Network+, Security+, Linux+, Server+, Cloud+, CySA+, PenTest+, Project+, Data+, SecurityX, and all others except noted lifetime certs.
Lifetime Certifications: CompTIA Server+ (SK0-005) is a lifetime certification — no renewal or CE credits required once earned. Some older historical A+ and server certifications (pre-2011) were also awarded "lifetime" status; verify on your certificate.
Renewal Options
Professionals can renew in two ways:
-
Option A: Exam Re-certification
Pass the current version of the certification exam. This automatically renews the certificate for another three years from the exam date. No CE credits or fees required. -
Option B: Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Earn the required number of Continuing Education Units from approved activities and pay a renewal fee using a CE token.
CEU Requirements by Certification Level
| Certification Level | CEUs Required / 3 Years | Typical Activities |
|---|---|---|
| Entry-Level (A+, Tech+) | 30–40 CEUs | Training courses, conference sessions, online certifications, work experience |
| Professional (Network+, Security+, CySA+, Cloud+, Linux+, Project+) | 40–60 CEUs | Advanced training, college coursework, vendor certifications, teaching/mentoring |
| Expert (SecurityX, PenTest+) | 50–150 CEUs | Conference speaking, SME contributions, published papers, advanced coursework |
Approved CE Activities
- Training & Education: Formal courses, webinars, conference sessions, college/university coursework
- IT Industry Work: Job experience (typically 1 CEU per 40 hours for in-scope roles)
- Community & Thought Leadership: Teaching, mentoring, conference speaking, creating instructional materials, CompTIA Subject Matter Expert (SME) participation
- Other Vendor Certifications: Earning certifications from AWS, Azure, Cisco, etc., can count toward CE
CE Renewal Costs
- CertMaster CE courses: $99–$149 USD (varies by cert; fastest automatic renewal path)
- CEU submission fee: ~$50 USD per cert renewal (only charged if uploading CEUs rather than taking CertMaster)
- Exam re-certification: $370–$450 USD (standard exam cost; auto-renews cert)

Government & Federal Alignment
CompTIA certifications are core to the DoD Manual 8140.03 (DoDM 8140.03), the modern replacement for the legacy DoD 8570 directive. DoDM 8140.03 prescribes cybersecurity workforce standards for U.S. Department of Defense contractors and federal IT roles.
Key DoD 8140 Alignments
- Security+ (SY0-701): Meets Information Assurance Technical (IAT) Level II baseline requirement. Accepted for DoD 8140 cybersecurity workforce positions including system administrators, network administrators, security technicians.
- CySA+, PenTest+, SecurityX: Map to advanced IAT roles, incident response, and threat-hunting positions.
- Network+, Cloud+: Foundational prerequisites for DoD 8140 infrastructure and cloud-focused roles.
DoD 8140 Work Role Families (NICE Framework)
DoDM 8140.03 uses the NICE (National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education) framework to define four work-role families:
- IAT (Information Assurance Technical) — System admins, network admins, security technicians
- IAM (Information Assurance Management) — Security managers, risk officers
- IASAE (Information Assurance System Architects and Engineers) — Enterprise architects, security architects
- CSSP (Cyber Security Service Providers) — Managed security service providers
CompTIA certs align across all four families depending on level (entry → expert).

- Exam languages: English (additional languages rolling out)
- Scheduling: Book up to 6 months in advance at Pearson VUE
CertMaster Practice Integration
CompTIA's study platform CertMaster Practice (included with most study bundles) integrates exam-style questions, video labs, and performance-based task simulations.
CompTIA's Mission & Competitive Positioning
Why CompTIA over vendor-specific certs?
- Vendor-neutral: Certs apply across Cisco, Microsoft, Linux, AWS, cloud providers — not locked into one ecosystem
- Job market: Widely recognized entry point for IT roles; often a hiring requirement or preferred credential
- ROI: More affordable than multi-vendor paths; stackable pathways reduce total time-to-expert
- DoD/federal: Mandatory or preferred for government contracting and security clearance IT roles
- Foundation: Before specializing (e.g., A+ before Server+, Network+, Cloud+), professionals get a shared language
