VCP-DCV (2V0-21.23) was the flagship professional-level credential for VMware vSphere system administrators and virtualization engineers managing on-premises enterprise data center infrastructure. Why VCP-DCV was retired: The Broadcom transition

November 2023: Broadcom completed acquisition of VMware for $61 billion.

May 2024: Broadcom announced three major changes:

1. Eliminated mandatory training course prerequisites for all VMware certifications (VCP, VCAP, Specialist)
2. Flattened exam pricing to flat $250 USD for all Broadcom certifications
3. Announced pivot toward hybrid-cloud and cloud-native certification portfolio

March 2025: Broadcom mandated that all VMware certifications adopt 3-year expiration with exam-based renewal only (eliminated CE credit renewal pathway). This effectively forced certificate holders to retake exams rather than simply accumulating continuing education credits.

July–November 2025: Broadcom phased out VCP-DCV exam registrations. New registrations halted. Official retirement announced.

December 15, 2025: VCP-DCV exam ceased to be offered. Existing VCP-DCV credentials remain valid on holders' resumes and LinkedIn but expire on rolling 3-year schedule (credentials granted March 2025 expire March 2028, etc.). Renewal requires passing successor exam (VCP-VVF or VCP-VCF), not retaking VCP-DCV.
