Overview & 2026 Updates

Cisco has undergone a comprehensive certification overhaul in early 2026 to align credentials with AI and automation demands, simplify naming, and provide clearer career progression pathways.

Key 2026 Changes

DevNet → Automation Rebrand (February 3, 2026)
On February 3, 2026, the entire DevNet certification track was rebranded as the Automation track. All active DevNet Associate, Professional, and Expert holders automatically became CCNA Automation, CCNP Automation, and CCIE Automation certified—no additional exams required. The Professional core exam changed from DEVCOR (350-901 v1.x) to AUTOCOR (350-901 v2.0), with new emphases on AI-ready networking and infrastructure-as-code practices.

CCNP Enterprise ENCOR v1.2 Release (March 19, 2026)
ENCOR v1.1 retired on March 18, 2026; v1.2 became the new standard on March 19, 2026. The major change: removal of all wireless content. Wireless design, QoS, security, and troubleshooting topics were stripped from ENCOR to tighten focus on enterprise core technologies (Architecture, Virtualization, Infrastructure, Network Assurance, Security, and Automation+AI). Wireless now falls under dedicated CCNP Wireless and CCIE Wireless credentials (launched March 19, 2026).

Cybersecurity & Collaboration Unification
Cisco aligned cybersecurity under CCNA/CCNP Cybersecurity (February 2026 rebrand). Collaboration exams were updated to v2.0 (CLCOR 350-801 v2.0, effective February 3, 2026) to include cloud collaboration and updated IP Phone/UC endpoints.

2026 Market Trends & Future Outlook

AI & Machine Learning in Networking

By 2026, AI-driven network management (Cisco DNA Center, ThousandEyes ML analytics, AIOps) is now standard in enterprise networks. Future CCNP/CCIE exams will increasingly focus on:

  • Anomaly detection via ML models
  • Automated troubleshooting workflows
  • Predictive network health (before outages)
  • Intent-based networking (Cisco SD-Access)

Implication: Candidates with Python + ML fundamentals will have competitive advantage; consider adding ML fundamentals (e.g., Andrew Ng's ML course) to CCNP Automation study plan.

Splunk Acquisition (2024) Integration

Cisco acquired Splunk in 2024. By 2026, Splunk integration into Cisco network observability (DNA Center, ThousandEyes) is deepening. Expect:

  • CCNP/CCIE exams to include Splunk-integrated monitoring scenarios
  • CI/CD pipelines for security/network policy now assume Splunk-like SIEM integration

DevNet → Automation Rebrand Success

The Feb 3, 2026 rebrand of DevNet to Automation is gaining traction. As infrastructure-as-code becomes non-optional, CCNA Automation + CCNP Automation are becoming as foundational as CCNA Networking + CCNP Enterprise.

Return of Wireless (CCNP Wireless, CCIE Wireless)

Wi-Fi 6/6E adoption, Cisco Meraki cloud management, and enterprise campus modernization drove the re-introduction of dedicated wireless credentials. Wireless skills are now seen as distinct from general enterprise networking.

Kubernetes & Container Orchestration

CCNP/CCIE Automation exams increasingly include container networking (CNI, service mesh, ingress controllers). Expect 10–15% of CCNP Automation exam to cover Kubernetes networking basics by 2027.

Certification Maintenance & Renewal

All Cisco certifications (except CCST, which has no renewal requirement) require renewal every 3 years.

Renewal Options

  1. Pass the current-version exam (same fee as initial exam)
  2. Pass a higher-level exam in the same domain (e.g., passing CCNP renews CCNA)
  3. Accumulate Continuing Education (CE) credits via:
    • Passing any Cisco exam in the same tier or higher
    • Completing Cisco Learning Network courses (limited CE credits)
    • Publishing technical articles (1–5 credits)
    • Speaking at conferences (5–10 credits)
    • Teaching (CE credits vary)

Example: If you earn CCNA in 2024, you must renew it by 2027 by passing CCNA again, passing CCNP, or accumulating 40 CE credits.

Conclusion & Recommendations

For Career Starters (College Grad or Career Changer)

  1. Pursue CCST first (150 hours, 1–2 months) → land first IT job as help desk, NOC tech, or junior network admin
  2. Pursue CCNA next (300–400 hours, 3–6 months on the job) → transition to mid-level network engineer role
  3. Pursue CCNP once you have 3+ years of hands-on experience → move to senior engineer or architect

Realistic timeline: CCST → CCNA → CCNP over 3–4 years with on-the-job learning

For Mid-Career IT Professionals

If you're a sysadmin, cloud engineer, or security analyst considering a network specialization:

  • Cloud/Automation background? → CCNA → CCNP Automation (6–9 months total)
  • Security background? → CCNA → CCNP Security (9–12 months total)
  • Generalist IT? → CCNA → CCNP Enterprise (12–18 months total)

All lead to $120K–$160K+ salaries by year 2.

For Enterprise Architects & Consultants

  • CCDE is faster than CCIE if your strength is design over hands-on configuration
  • CCIE Enterprise is still the gold standard for prestige and premium compensation
  • Both command $130K–$200K+ base salaries

For DevOps & Platform Engineers

  • CCNP Automation (formerly DevNet Professional) is your primary target
  • Combine with Kubernetes (CKA), AWS (Solutions Architect Professional), or Terraform (HashiCorp Certified) for $160K–$200K+ total comp

Free vs. Paid Trade-Off

  • Free approach: Cisco Networking Academy + Cisco DevNet Sandbox + Jeremy's IT Lab YouTube = viable for CCNA, but time-intensive (8–12 months)
  • Recommended hybrid: Cisco Networking Academy (free structured curriculum) + Wendell Odom books ($120) + Boson exams ($150) + 3 months CBT Nuggets ($75) = ~$350 total, high success rate
  • Premium fast-track: INE all-access ($2,000) completed in 6 months = justified if your employer reimburses
